Charles Courtney Tew was an educator, a soldier and, in 1846, was the first graduate of The Citadel. As a Colonel of the 2nd N.C. Regiment, he was killed at the battle of Antietam, His sword, a present from his students at the Arsenal in Columbia, was taken from him and disappeared for a century and a half.
